1984 Summer Olympics Games of the XXIII Olympiad
The 1984 Summer Olympics were held in the city of Los Angeles, California in the United States. The games were formally known as Games of the XXIII Olympiad. In response to America boycotting the 1980 Olympics held in Moscow, the Soviet Union alongside other countries boycotted this event. They included East German, Cuba, and Libya.
The highlights of the games included performance by Li Ning from China who won a total of six medals, 3 gold, 2 silver and a bronze. This made his compatriots name him "Prince of Gymnasts.” Nawal El Moutawakel from Morocco was the first female Muslim Olympic champion and the first person in her country to win the 400 metres hurdles. In a first ever gold medal for Portugal Carlos Lopes won the men’s marathon and broke the world record. His record stood for 24 years and the country has not won the marathon since. It was at this event the women marathon was started in the Olympics and Joan Benoit won the race.
Term paper writing and essays in college say the games were the most profitable of all held previously.
